Our Department
Sumner County has 1188 square miles, 36 miles from east to west, and 33 miles from the Oklahoma
State line north. This makes Sumner County the fourth largest county in Kansas. The Sheriff's
Department has a total of 45 employees, to handle the needs of the County. These include the
Sheriff, Undersheriff, Chief Deputy, 3 Detectives, 10 Patrol Deputies, 1 DARE officer, 2 Court
Security Deputies, 2 Civil Process Deputies, 1 full time civilian employee, 24 Detention Officers, 3
Part Time Deputy, 14 Reserve Deputies. The County also has working agreements with the
surrounding Police Departments. This cooperation enables the local police departments to respond
to calls in the County, around their respective towns. Since the County is so large, this is an extremely
helpful, and important program to the Sheriff's Department and to the citizens. This allows, for quicker
response times to emergency calls.
